Coach or Crash

Whether in an athletic event or a simple conversation, the same principles apply that determine whether the outcome we desire will be successful or not. The starting point is our frame of mind, our mental state.
According to Robert Dilts, multiple best-selling author, Hypnotherapist and a student of the founders of the Neuro Linguistic Programming Methodology (NLP), Richard Bandler and John Grinder, there are but two mental states; Resourceful and Unresourceful.
In one of his earliest works, “Sleight of Mouth”, Dilts uses an acronym to define the two states as C.O.A.C.H. And C.R.A.S.H. The C.O.A.C.H. Or Resourceful State, which stands for:
Centered
Open
Alert
Connected
Hold (what’s happening)
and The C.R.A.S.H.or Unresourceful State
Contracted
Reactive
Analysis Paralysis
Separated
Hostile
Isn’t it obvious why the magic happens when we are in the C.O.A.C.H. State? Think of Centered as balanced. Isn’t being properly balanced the key to any athletic endeavor? The same is true for non-athletic ones, like conversations. Being Open and Alert to new information, new data, what’s going on with that other person, is what makes them sense you care about them, which is a critical element in any conversation, business or otherwise. That’s where the Connection happens. And finally, holding that state is important throughout lest you find yourself moving into the C.R.A.S.H. State.
When we are Contracted and Reactive, in a cycle of Analysis Paralysis we feel Separated and that leads to Hostility because those negative emotions lead to physical reaction such as tightness, where all the resources and confidence shrivel and nothing seems to work. That leads to a negative outcome, and the end result is hostility…maybe towards yourself, maybe towards the other person, or both.
The question is how do we get ourselves into the C.O.A.C.H. State, especially when we our mind is processing negative thoughts and more inclined in the moment to be in the C.R.A.S.H. State? The good news is that there are strategies to accomplish these three things:
- How to get into C.O.A.C.H State
- How to quickly identify and go from C.R.A.S.H. State to C.O.A.C.H.
- How to trigger your mind to get into C.O.A.C.H. State on Demand
